At Barefoot Retreats we celebrate living simply, sustainably, healthily, joyfully and consciously.
Started by Angus McLean, The Barefoot Chef, the retreats are a way to share the benefits
of a life led this way.
“Yoga has been a big part of my life since I was a University student, 23 years ago.
Having kept up my practice for 16 years I travelled to Rishikesh, India
to embark on my Asthanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher training.
I now specialise in Kundalini yoga, Qi Gong and mindfulness based yoga therapy
and have been teaching around New Zealand since 2012.
After a year working as a retreat leader/yoga teacher at the amazing Aro Ha in Queenstown
I felt I was ready to turn my dreams of running my own retreats at Bethells into reality."
an Inviting Escape
We offer affordable day retreats set in the heart of beautiful Bethells Valley,
just a short 35-minute drive from Auckland CBD, but a world away from modern life.
The day-long, accessible retreats are perfect for busy people who would find it hard
to drop everything and disappear for a week or more to some far-flung destination.
Barefoot Retreats blend transformative yoga, dance and movement
with lovingly prepared plant-based food, mindful hiking,
meditation and learning.
Leaving you feeling deeply refreshed and reset at the end of the day
Barefoot Retreats curates a program of collective rituals meant to raise awareness,
connect likeminded people, inspire change, and promote mindfulness.
From yoga practices, bush walks and slow-food workshops to guest lectures and guided meditation,
our gatherings foster an environment of organic togetherness.
Into the Wild
We are based at HeartSong Dance Temple, Te Henga (Bethells Beach).
Just 35 minutes drive from Auckland CBD and 5 minutes from the wild,
untamed beauty of Te Henga. This place is very special.
Te Henga draws its energy from the land and surrounding sea and for centuries
…this spiritual place has attracted people from around the globe.
Ancient Maori believed that Te Henga harnessed a deep spiritual connection that transcends time.
The Barefoot Chef
Angus McLean, The Barefoot Chef, believes good food has the power to heal
and that a shared meal is the basis of a happy connected community.
He creates sumptuous plant-based feasts and believes you don’t have
to sacrifice flavour and variety to eat a vegan diet.
Don’t just take our word for it, here are what a few of our lovely guests thought of their Barefoot Retreat.
It was an amazing day and I felt like I was in a dream from start to end.
The setting, the yoga, - what a way to start the day, I felt so energised and alive after the Kundalini session.
The breakfast was beyond compare - it looked so amazing in that setting and tasted so good. I loved the walk, the beach, I can still hear the roar of the sea in my head as we were doing the Qigong.
The conversations, the lunch and the food that Zee prepared was outstanding and so delicious and I loved the LOVE he put in to it.
I learnt so much that day it's hard to put it down on paper, from the cooking demo, to conversations with Joy and her passion for saving our planet and people, Tane's knowledge of the area and of course his beautiful class and voice at the end of the day."
"Literally life changing.
I had so much anxiety as I didn't feel advanced enough
spiritually or yoga wise to participate or be accepted.
I spent a lot of the day alone..and more silent than I normally ever are as I don’t cope well energetically around multiple people.
I get a lot of physical symptoms and I battled wanting to leave all day. The fact I stayed was life changing and I truly felt Accepted.
The yoga was incredible. That temple was breath taking and that day is a firm favourite in memories of my life.
Please can I book in firmly.for the next one. Love to you all beautiful people. x '“
“As a passionate advocate of ‘retreating’ as a remedy for all that ails you,
I have to say that my first Barefoot Retreat with Angus, Taane and Zee is one that I recommended to all literally within minutes’ of leaving.
The close proximity to the city in such a stellar location was the icing on the cake for what was a delicious day of amazing food, restful and inspiring movement and a great bunch of humans.
New year, come at me!”
